Yugo was known as the Zastava Koral. And Yugo mainly produced subcompact hatchbacks. The Yugo cars were formerly manufactured by Zastava Automobiles. It was a Yugoslav company at that time. The prototype was built on July 2, 1977. Series vehicles appeared on November 28, 1980. A facelift version was launched on November 11, 2008. 141,651 units were sold. But the number declined to 1,412 units in 1992. Although Yugo had attracted many avid drivers, it received much criticism for its design, safety, and reliability during its run in the United States and several other export markets.
Yugo was founded in 1853. It was initially an arms manufacturer. By the late 1930s, the company had expanded into automobile production. It supplied trucks to the Royal Yugoslav Army. Vehicle production continued until 1941 when World War II reached Yugoslavia. After the war, it was allowed to produce jeeps. In 1984, an automotive entrepreneur tested the models, now branded Yugo, for the U.S. market. 1989 is considered the "golden year". Nearly 200,000 vehicles were built that year.
When Yugoslavia broke up in the early 1990s, manufacturing slowed and parts supplies were interrupted. So the number plummeted greatly. Although sanctions were not imposed until May 1992, it manufactured vehicles with a variety of surplus accessories from June 1991 to early 1996. As the country's standard of living began to improve, productivity slowly increased. Even so, it again experienced problems when manufacturing was shut down in mid-1999 due to the war. By the early 1990s, Yugo was forced to withdraw models from every export market. Only till 2000, it could restart production. And it was not until 2003 that it was launched in Florida. Malcolm signed a deal with Yugo in 2002 to bring the make back to the U.S. Under Bricklin's direction. However, he switched to marketing the Chery China line of cars. The final vehicle, the 794,428th, ended on November 11, 2008.
Nowadays, it is still common in Serbia. Nearly 60,000 are still in use. Most of them were built in the 2000s. Products are still available at most auto parts stores and scrapyards across the country. Although it stopped manufacturing, drivers can still find aftermarket accessories online. Several auto parts can be selected. It has a great selection of new replacement auto parts.
