The brake drum is important to the vehicle since it allows the car to slow down and come to a halt. Some vehicles have the drum brake connected to the rear wheels and axles.
ComponentsThe brake drum is made from a special kind of iron that is heat-conductive and resistant to wearing out. The brake drum rotates in sync with the wheel and axle. When the user presses on the brakes, the lining is pushed against the surface causing friction to slow or stop the vehicle.
The drum brake is usually accompanied by two shoes that have a metal framing in which the friction lining is secured. When applying the brakes, the friction linings make contact with the surface of the brake drum causing the springs to retract the shoes once the user is done pressing the brakes. The friction surface of the brake drum will eventually wear out with use.
Common issues with a faulty brake drumA faulty brake drum can lead to a grinding noise, as well as soft brake pedals.
