Radiator

The radiator is the most important part of the engine since it gets rid of all the heat from within it. The radiator is effective in cooling down the hot coolant due to the fact that the radiator gives the coolant a surface area to release the heat. Most radiators are made from aluminum since it allows heat to transfer quickly.

Radiation and convection

Heat transfer is a very important process that occurs due to thermal radiation convection and conduction. Those are important factors that allow heat to transfer using phase change. The radiator will have multiple fins to increase the surface area and allow for heat exchange.

Engine cooling

To cool an internal combustion engine you need a radiator which is always required in automobiles. Not only in automobiles but also in other types of transportation including aircrafts, motorcycles, and railway locomotives where heat is generated.

The heat that the engine generates needs to be cooled down. That is where the coolant comes into play. Coolant is water-based with a mixture of glycols and other additives to prevent freezing or corrosion. As coolant travels through the engine block, it absorbs the heat from the engine and cools it down.

Common concerns with a faulty radiator

A faulty radiator can lead to coolant leaking out, overheating of the vehicle, and low coolant levels.
