FAQ for Brake Hose Repair

Q: How to strip the nylon coating from the brake pipe ends to be flared?
A:
You need to select the appropriate blade on the coating stripping tool included in the J 45405, by unthreading the blade block from the stripping tool and installing the block with the desired blade facing the tool rollers, and inserting the brake pipe end to be flared into the stripping tool to the depth of the ledge on the tool rollers. While holding the brake pipe firmly against the stripping tool roller ledges, you can rotate the thumbwheel of the tool until the blade contacts the brake pipe coated surface, and rotate the stripping tool in a clockwise direction, ensuring that the brake pipe end remains against the tool roller ledges. After each successive revolution of the stripping tool, you can carefully rotate the thumbwheel of the tool clockwise, to continue stripping the coating from the brake pipe until the metal pipe surface is exposed, loosen the thumbwheel of the tool and remove the brake pipe and inspect the stripped end of the brake pipe to ensure that the proper amount of coating has been removed.

Q: How do you install the Brake Hose-Rear?
A:
You need to assemble the new copper brake hose gaskets, the brake hose bolt to the brake hose, and install the brake hose to caliper bolt to the brake caliper. With the weight of the vehicle on the suspension, you can install the brake hose into the bracket, align the hose fitting with the notch in the bracket, use the hose paint stripe as a visual aid, install the retainer onto the hose fitting at the bracket and remove the rubber cap or plug from the exposed brake pipe fitting end. Then you can connect the brake pipe fitting to the brake hose, install the rear tire and wheel assembly, and ensure that the hose does not make contact with any part of the suspension. If the hose makes contact, you can remove the hose and correct the condition, and then bleed the hydraulic brake system.

Q: How do you remove the Brake Hose-Rear?
A:
You need to remove the rear tire and wheel assembly, clean all dirt and foreign material from the brake hoses and brake pipe fitting, use a backup wrench on the hose fitting to disconnect the brake pipe fitting from the brake hose, then cap or plug the brake pipe fitting end and remove the brake hose retaining clip from the hose mounting bracket, the hose from the bracket, the brake hose to caliper bolt from the brake caliper, the brake hose from the brake caliper and discard the two copper brake hose gaskets.
