Q: What should be done to perform the automated bleed procedure?
A:
First, you should raise and support the vehicle. Second, you should remove all four tire and wheel assemblies and inspect the brake system. Then, you should lower the vehicle, inspect the battery state of charge, install a scan tool and turn the ignition on, with the engine off. After that, you should establish communications with the ABS with the scan tool. Then, you should follow the directions given on the scan tool, pressure bleeds the base brake system, and follow the scan tool directions until the desired brake pedal height is achieved. Then, you should press the brake pedal to inspect for firmness. After that, you should remove the scan tool and install the tire and wheel assemblies. Finally, you should inspect the brake fluid level and road test the vehicle while inspecting that the pedal remains high and firm.

Q: What should be done if the brake pedal feels spongy?
A:
You should inspect the brake system for external leaks, use a scan tool and perform the antilock brake system automated bleeding procedure to remove any air that may have been trapped in the brake pressure modulator valve (BPMV).

Q: What should be done to flush the hydraulic brake system?
A:
Firstly, you should inspect the brake fluid for fluid separation or fluid discoloration and inspect the master cylinder reservoir cap diaphragm and the reservoir-to-master cylinder grommets for swelling. Secondly, if the brake fluid was contaminated with an oil-based or a silicone-based substance, you should remove and repair contaminated components, and clean out and dry all the hydraulic brake pipes. Thirdly, if the brake fluid was contaminated with water or dirt, rust, corrosion, and/or brake dust, you should replace the brake master cylinder reservoir cap diaphragm. After that, you should fill the brake master cylinder reservoir to the maximum-fill level with approved brake fluid from a clean, sealed brake fluid container. Finally, you should pressure bleed the hydraulic brake system and begin the procedure with the pressure bleeder reservoir filled to the maximum-fill level with the correct brake fluid as indicated.

Q: What do we need to note before we perform the ABS automated bleed procedure?
A:
You should first perform a pressure bleed of the base brake system. The automated bleed procedure is recommended when base brake system bleeding does not achieve the desired pedal height or feel, extreme loss of brake fluid has occurred or air ingestion is suspected in the secondary circuits of the brake modulator assembly.

Q: What should be done if the brake pedal still feels spongy after repeating the bleeding procedure
A:
You should inspect the brake system for external leaks and pressure bleed the hydraulic brake system to purge any air that may still be trapped in the system.
