FAQ for Brake Master Cylinder Repair

Q: How to bleed the master cylinder bench?
A:
First, you should secure the mounting flange of the brake master cylinder in a bench vise. Second, you should remove the master cylinder reservoir cap and diaphragm and install suitable fittings to the master cylinder ports and provide for hose attachment. Third, you should route the hoses into the master cylinder reservoir. After that, you should fill the master cylinder reservoir and ensure that the ends of the transparent hoses are fully submerged in the brake fluid. Then, you should depress and release the primary piston and observe the flow of fluid coming from the ports. Then, you should continue to depress and release the primary piston. After that, you should remove the transparent hoses and install the master cylinder reservoir cap and diaphragm. Finally, you should remove the fittings with the transparent hoses from the master cylinder ports, wrap the master cylinder with a clean shop cloth to prevent brake fluid spills, and remove the master cylinder from the vise.

Q: How to fill the master cylinder reservoir?
A:
First, you should inspect the brake fluid level through the brake master cylinder reservoir. If the brake fluid level is at or below the half-full point, you should inspect the brake system for wear and possible brake fluid leaks. If the level is at or below the half-full point, and the brake system did not reveal wear or brake fluid leaks, the brake fluid may be topped off up to the maximum-fill level. If brake system service was just completed, the brake fluid may be topped off up to the maximum-fill level. If the level is above the half-full point, you should not add brake fluid under normal conditions. If the brake fluid is to be added to the master cylinder reservoir, you should clean the outside of the reservoir on and around the reservoir cap before removing the cap and diaphragm.

Q: How to remove the master cylinder?
A:
First, you should turn the ignition switch to the off position and apply the brake pedal several times until the brake pedal becomes firm. Then, you should use a suitable tool, remove and discard the brake fluid and you should remove and position aside the radiator surge tank. Otherwise, if equipped with the master cylinder heat shield, you should remove the master cylinder heat shield nuts. After that, you should remove the master cylinder heat shield bolt and the master cylinder heat shield and you should disconnect the master cylinder fluid level indicator switch electrical connector. Then, you should disconnect the master cylinder primary brake pipe fitting and cap the brake pipe fitting and plug the master cylinder outlet port. Finally, you should disconnect the master cylinder secondary brake pipe fitting and cap the brake pipe fitting and plug the master cylinder outlet port.
