GM Service and GM brake engineering have performed competitive evaluations on a significant number of bench and on-car brake lathes and these tests measured critical performance characteristics such as flatness, surface finish, and the ability of the lathe to repeat accuracy over many uses. In each test, single-pass lathe designs outperformed the competitors and single-pass brake lathes are more productive requiring less time to perform the same procedure.

You should inspect the brake fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir, raise the vehicle, remove the tire and wheel assembly, compress the front brake caliper piston, remove the mounting bolts from the brake caliper mounting bracket, the brake caliper and mounting bracket assembly and the retaining clips from the brake rotor, clean any rust or foreign material from the mating surface of the rotor and flange with the J 42450 hub cleaning kit. If the brake rotor is not going to be replaced but just removed from the front hub, you should mark the relationship of the brake rotor and a wheel stud, then remove the front brake rotor from the wheel hub and clean the brake rotor contact area on the front hub.

You should raise the vehicle and remove the tire and wheel assembly, the front hub and bearing assembly, and the retaining bolts for the splash shield and the splash shield.

You should use the J 42450-A to clean the wheel bearing/hub, use a micrometer to measure the thinnest point of the brake rotor, use the J 41013 to thoroughly clean the rust from the brake rotor flange, refinish the brake rotor and note that failure to obtain the best possible braking surface finish may cause the vehicle to stop with difficulty. After machining the rotor, you should use 120 grit aluminum oxide sandpaper and a non-directional rotor finisher, if available, to create a non-directional braking surface and clean the braking surfaces with GM P/N 12377981 (Canadian P/N 10953463) or equivalent, brake parts cleaner.

You should inspect the brake fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir, raise the vehicle, remove the tire and wheel assembly, compress the rear brake caliper piston, remove the rear brake caliper mounting bracket and the brake rotor retaining clips, clean any rust or foreign material from the mating surface of the axle, remove the brake rotor, clean the brake rotor to the rear axle flange contact area, refinish the rotor and inspect the park brake components.
