FAQ for Oxygen Sensor Repair
Q: What should not be done when removing the oxygen sensor?
A:
You mustn't remove this pigtail from either the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) or the Oxygen Sensor (O2S). Removing the pigtail or the connector will affect sensor operation. And you can not damage the sensor pigtail and harness wires in such a way that the wires inside are exposed. This could provide a path for foreign materials to enter the sensor and cause performance problems.

Q: Can I apply contact cleaner or other materials to the sensor when servicing the heated oxygen sensor?
A:
No, you cannot. You shouldn't apply contact cleaner or other materials to the sensor or vehicle harness connectors. These materials may get into the sensor, causing poor performance. Also, the sensor pigtail and harness wires must not be damaged in such a way that the wires inside are exposed. This could provide a path for foreign materials to enter the sensor and cause performance problems.

Q: What should be noticed when you spray salt water?
A:
Mixing 12 ounces of water with approximately 1 tablespoon of salt will yield a salt solution of 5%. You can fill a normal spray bottle with this mixture. This mixture is sufficient to enhance the water's conductivity. This may cause the circuit to fail more easily when sprayed. Once the mixture is completed, spray the suspect area liberally with the solution. Then, while monitoring either a scan tool or DMM, manipulate the harness as discussed previously.
