FAQ for Automatic Transmission Shifter Cable Repair

Q: What can we do to adjust the shift cable of the 4L60-E automatic transmission?
A:
You can position the steering column transmission shift lever to PARK (P), apply the parking brake, raise the vehicle, and position the transmission range select lever to PARK (P). Slide the black retaining clip forward on the range select lever cable end, push the white lock button on the range select lever cable end out, inspect the metal core adjust body on the cable end for dirt or debris that may restrict the travel, and remove any debris by washing the cable end, the metal core adjust body, and the white lock button with soap and water. Lower the vehicle, ensure that the parking brake is applied, turn on the ignition switch, and move the transmission shift lever from PARK (P) to 1 and back to PARK (P) ten times. Place the steering column transmission shift lever in the Park (P) position, turn the ignition switch to the OFF position, raise the vehicle and position the transmission range select lever to PARK (P). Next push in the white lock button to secure the core adjuster body inside the range select lever cable end, slide the black retainer clip rearward over the cable end until it covers the white lock button, lock the clip over the cable end, lower the vehicle and turn on the ignition switch. Ensure that all the transmission shift light positions (P, R, N, D, 3, 2, 1) are engaged and illuminated, and ensure that the engine starts in PARK (P) and in NEUTRAL (N) positions only. Then you can turn the ignition switch to LOCK, ensure that the ignition key can only be removed with the transmission shift lever in the PARK (P) position and start the engine and check the vehicle transmission shifting.

Q: What is the removal procedure for the shift cable of the 4L80-E automatic transmission?
A:
You need to position the steering column transmission shift lever to PARK (P), remove the carpet and the carpet retainers on the driver's side to expose the shift cable, and disconnect the shift cable from the steering column shift control and the shift cable from the retainers on the cab floor pan. Next, remove the cable retainer from the transmission mounting bracket, squeeze the cable retainer while pulling the cable towards the rear of the vehicle, disconnect the cable end from the transmission shift ball stud and position the transmission shift to PARK (P). Remove the shift cable from under the fuel line and from the rear transmission bracket, note the routing of the shift cable on the vehicle before removal, and remove the shift cable grommet from the floor panel and the shift cable from the vehicle.

Q: How do you install the shift cable of the 4L60-E automatic transmission?
A:
You need to position the steering column transmission shift lever to PARK (P), ensure that the transmission is in the mechanical park position, position the transmission range select the lever to PARK (P), and rotate the shift clockwise until the lever reaches the full clockwise stop position. Install the shift cable to the vehicle, route the cable in the original location noted during removal, and install the shift cable grommet to the floor panel, the shift cable retainers on the cab floor pan and the shift cable end to the steering column shift control. Make sure that the steering column transmission shift lever is in Park (P), install the carpet and the carpet retainers on the driver's side, and route the range select lever cable under the fuel lines. Then you can connect the shift cable to the rear transmission bracket, install the shift cable retainer to the transmission cable bracket, remove the black shipping clip from the new shift cable and discard the clip. Install the shift cable end to the transmission range select lever, push the cable end onto the transmission shift lever stud and adjust the shift cable.
