Daewoo is a South Korean automobile manufacturer. Its name in Korean means Great Universe. It was established as "National Motors" in 1937 in Bupyeong-gu, Incheon, Japanese Korea. In 1962, the Automobile Industry Promotion Policy was announced by the South Korean government. After that, the company's name was changed to Saenara Motor in November 1962. In 1983, it became Daewoo Motors. Due to financial difficulties, it sold most of its assets to General Motors in 2001. Then, it became a subsidiary of GM. In 2011, it was renamed GM Korea.
The company collaborated with Toyota in 1965. But after 7 years, Toyota withdrew. After that, the corporation began to cooperate with GM. Their relationship grew in the 1980s when the Daewoo Group gained control. Until 1996, all cars were based on models from General Motors. The Royale was one of its important marques at that time. It was a series of mid-size cars that were produced in 1983. It was replaced by the Prince in 1991. But its top-line called the Imperial continued until 1993. The Imperial was added in 1989. It was reminiscent of the Chrysler Imperial, New Yorker, and some other luxury Japanese sedans.
The Daewoo LeMans was the first Daewoo addition. It was based on the Opel Kadett E. And it was a compact vehicle produced between 1986 and 1994. It was replaced by the Daewoo Cielo. The latter was mechanically identical to the former, differentiated only by some parts. This car was produced until February 1997. It was one of the company's greatest successes. It was sold almost worldwide. And it was popular with its reasonable prices, will performing auto parts, and stylish accessories. In 1996, the automaker introduced the Daewoo Lanos. It was a compact car equipped with good quality and inexpensive auto parts.
Daewoo's best-known automobile was the Daewoo Matiz introduced in 1998. Because of its high performance, better-than-average parts, and stylish appearance, it became the company's best-seller over the next four years. In the 21st century, there are other famous marques released by the brand. For example, the Kalos was exported as the Aveo in 2005. The Tosca appeared in 2006. And the Winstorm SUV was released in the same year. Daewoo continued to exist in some overseas markets after its replacement with Chevrolet. Thus, its vehicles and auto parts can still be bought.
