About Smart

Smart is a German automobile brand. It is a joint venture supported by Mercedes-Benz AG and China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group now. It was established in 2019. It is headquartered in Ningbo, China. The brand was founded in 1994 by Micro Compact Car AG (MCC). It was a joint venture between SMH and Daimler-Benz previously. SMH became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Daimler-Benz in 1998 and was subsequently renamed MCC Smart GmbH. It produces small electric cars. Its manufacturing plants are in China. Previously the brand produced micro vehicles and minivans in Smartville. Its distribution, marketing, and aftermarket activities in Europe are now handled by smart Europe GmbH. It mainly produces vehicles in China and sells them globally.

The design concept originated from Mercedes-Benz in the early 1970s to the late 1980s. With brief support from Volkswagen, Daimler-Benz released its first model in October 1998. Several original designs were introduced. The initial model was the "Fortwo". on January 1, 1999, MCC changed its name to MCC Smart GmbH. And by 2000, it dropped its final association with SMH and became Smart GmbH. The model line was then expanded. The Roadster and the super-mini Forfour were produced. But the expansion did not increase profits. It lost almost 4 billion euros from 2003 to 2006. Then it integrated with Daimler. 2005 saw the end of production. The planned SUV was terminated. And the production of the Roadster was halted. In 2006, it was liquidated and its operations were absorbed directly by Daimler Chrysler.

Until April 2019, the brand was operated under Mercedes-Benz. It provides the Fortwo coupe, convertible, and Forfour hatchback. In 2019, Daimler announced a joint venture partnership with Chinese automaker Geely. The deal values a total of 5.4 million yuan. It involves a new production plant to be built in China. The plant would begin the production of a new generation of smart cars. 2021 saw the first concept of this partnership, called Concept 1, unveiled at the Munich Motor Show. The car is based on Geely's SEA platform. It features design details from existing Smart models. It has a panoramic glass roof, frameless suicide rear doors, and a large touch-screen system.
