About Plymouth Sundance

The Plymouth Sundance was an economical 3- and 5-door hatchback. It was introduced for the 1987 model year. The first car was introduced on August 25, 1986. Production ended on March 9, 1994. The Sundance was subsequently replaced by other models. The Plymouth Sundance used a variant of the K-car platform, the P-body. All engines had a displacement of 2.2 or 2.5 L, some were turbocharged. The engines were tuned for torque rather than horsepower. A 3.0 L V6 engine was added later, replacing the turbocharged one. All were equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission. 3-speed automatic transmission was optional on cars with four cylinders. A four-speed automatic transmission was optional on V6-powered automobiles.
In 1989, the Sundance received a facelift. The sealed-beam headlights were dropped and replaced with more aerodynamic composite units. A new grille and taillights were also among the changes. 1990 saw the driver's side airbag become standard on all models. In 1994, motorized passenger-side seat belts were added to the U.S.-market Sundance. These motorized parts did not meet Canadian safety standards. Therefore, the Canadian market Sundance continued to use manual passenger seat belts. And the 1994 Sundance could not be legally imported across the U.S.-Canada border in any direction. At that time, the Sundance was the least expensive type on the market with a standard driver's side airbag. The airbag had become standard on all Plymouth vehicles in the U.S. market in 1990.
