Wheel Cylinder

The wheel cylinder is part of the hydraulic brake system which is designed to press the brake shoe against the brake drum. It important to the vehicle due to the fact that it helps the braking process be more effective. The pistons are very useful as well as they provide that connection with the brake shoe.

Wheel cylinder operation

The wheel cylinder is made up of a cylinder which has two pistons in total. The function is to utilize force onto the shoes, and bring the drum into contact causing friction. While also being connected to the shaped rods with the use of the shoes.

Brake pressure and brake fluid

When pressing on the brakes there is a force the cylinder pistons outward, and forces the cup seal into the bore to avoid any leaks. With the use of a spring, it allows for the seal to maintain that pressure after releasing the brakes.

Brake fluid that is based on glycol has the ability to perform with other fluids like water and still function well. It absorbs as well but as the moisture level increases, it can cause corrosion in the wheel cylinder.

Common issues with a bad wheel cylinder

The issue with a bad wheel cylinder is that there is lack of responsiveness and leaks may occur.
