The steering knuckle is important to the steering system as it connects various points in the suspension. It all depends on the suspension as the car steering knuckle might connect to the upper and lower ball joints.
TypesThe steering knuckle comes in all shapes and sizes since the designs vary to fit all kinds of applications and suspension types. Although the steering knuckles come in different types, there are two main types which are the hub and the spindle.
ApplicationsIn a non-drive suspension, you can find that the knuckle is accompanied by a spindle and attached to the brake drum. The wheel is attached to the lug studs and it allows free rotation on the shaft. While in a drive suspension the knuckle has no spindle, but it does have a hub that is attached to the bearings and shaft.
Common issues with a steering knuckleA bad steering knuckle can lead to vibrations of the steering wheel, the vehicle pulling to one certain side, and the tires will wear out unevenly.
