The oxygen sensor are equipped onto the modern vehicles, and they monitor the amount of oxygen that is in the exhaust. And it usually works with the engine control module to keep the vehicle performance and emission consistent. As an electronic device that has the ability to measure oxygen that is in gas or liquid.

Oxygen sensor concept

The vehicle's is equipped with a device known as the oxygen sensor which makes the control of fuel injection and emission possible. This device helps decide whether the relation of the air and fuel of the combustion engine are rich or lean. Although the sensor does not truly measure oxygen concentration, it gives the quantity of the oxygen on the exhaust and in the air.

Many modern combustion engines use oxygen sensor use the oxygen sensor to benefit the vehicle in reducing the emissions. And with the help of the engine control unit (ECU) the system does its best to keep a reliable air-fuel ratio with the information it got from the oxygen sensor.

Oxygen sensor technologies

The technologies in use are electrodes and optodes which helps measure the oxygen. The electrode measuring process is done by the oxygen being dissolved into liquid. As oxygen enters the sensor through the membrane and reduced to create a measurable electric current.

While the optodes is based more on the concentration of oxygen. It's an optical measurement, where a chemical film is pasted to the optical cable and the fluorescence properties of this film rest on the oxygen concentration.

Common issues with a bad oxygen sensor

A bad oxygen sensor can lead to a decrease in engine performance, reliability, and emission control will decrease.
