The fuel pressure regulator is an essential device in which it helps the control the amount of pressure going into the fuel injector. The device changes the amount of pressure the engine needs to allow the correct volume of fuel flow into the fuel system.
Fuel pressure regulator functionThe main function of the regulator is to make sure that there is fuel available for the fuel injectors, which is then distributed to other parts. The fuel is released at an even pressure to allow the PCM to vary when in idle or if more fuel is needed. Although the fuel pressure may rise, the regulator is there to ensure that the pressure is at a certain range.
Types of regulatorsMany engines use one of the two regulators that are available, there is an older regulator as well as a more modern regulator. The older regulator uses suction from the manifold as air is pulled in from the cylinders as the RPM rises. This gives the regulator's diaphragm the sign to open the fuel line for more capacity.
The more modern regulator is controlled by a computer related device. This lets the regulator receive commands from the computer when there is feedback from the fuel pressure sensor or other sensors in the vehicle.
Common issues with a bad fuel pressure regulatorA bad fuel pressure regulator can lead to excess fuel being released to the engine, this will cause poor fuel economy, and low power.
