The fuel cap is vital to the fuel tank as it helps seal it and keeps any fuel from leaking out. It also does the job of keeping any harmful debris or dirt from entering the fuel tank, also keeping any fuel or vapors from escaping as it can cause a fire.

Nowadays modern vehicles with a combustion engine are made to have a device that is able to contain fuel vapors of fuel from the fuel tank. A seal is formed between the filler cap and the fuel tank filler neck in order to prevent any harmful gases from escaping into the environment.

The fuel cap has evolved throughout the years, from being visible to concealed and it was sort of a fashion statement. And as vehicles became more efficient it wasn't all about look, and they started to be merged in with the car's body. Then came the muscle cars in the 60s which brought a certain style of caps that are still being used in modern vehicles.

A faulty fuel cap can cause the vehicle to have poor fuel economy, the cap may loosen, and fuel vapors can escape.
