The exhaust gas temperature sensor is crucial because it calculates the temperature of the exhaust gas. Once the data has been measured it is transmitted to the engine control unit where proper steps are taken.
Exhaust gas temperature sensor functionThe exhaust gas temperature has two types of sensors which are the positive temperature coefficient (PTC) and the negative temperature coefficient (NTC). The only dissimilarity they have is that they calculate temperature differently. The NTC is known to have a decrease in resistance as the temperature increases, while the PTCs resistance goes in line with the temperature. So if the sensor detects extreme temperature changes, the ECU will less the temperature by adjusting the boost pressure or the amount of fuel inserted into the catalytic converter.
Common issues with a faulty exhaust gas temperature sensorA faulty exhaust gas temperature sensor can lead to poor fuel economy, an increase in emissions, and a decline in vehicle performance.
