The alternator is an important part of the vehicle as it is a built in charger for the vehicle's battery. It acts as a generator that sends power to other electrical components while the vehicle is in constant movement. The alternator is able to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy, which then turns into an alternating current.
Alternator conceptThe alternator has a conductor that moves in relation to the magnetic field which creates an electromotive force. The vehicle uses a rotor that allows control of the alternator's voltage by measuring the current of the winding. Alternators are used in central power which control the field current in order to keep the power system stable.
Generating electricityElectricity is generated when the belt spins the rotor, which produces a magnetic field and makes a voltage. Alternators are able to produce AC current which is transformed into DC current which in turn recharges the battery as well as power system. The voltage pushed out is controlled by field current.
Common issues with a bad alternatorA faulty alternator can lead the vehicle to have loss of power, dim lights, and stalling.
