The accelerator pedal position (APP) sensor follows the position of the accelerator pedal and sends the information back to the engine control unit. The computer device opens up the throttle body to enhance the flow of fuel.
Accelerator pedal position (APP) operationThe APP sensor controls the vehicle's acceleration based on the position of the pedal. So if the pedal moves forward the vehicle will accelerate, but if it moves back then the sensor tells the engine computer the new position and decelerates causing less fuel to flow into the engine. Data is important because the computer sends the information to the throttle blade, and a valve is opened so the intake can take in more air.
The APP sensor operates by using the hall effect sensor that determines the position of the pedal by a magnetic field. These details are relayed to the ECM to let it know how much force is on the gas pedal.
Common issues with a faulty accelerator pedal position sensorA faulty accelerator pedal position sensor can cause the car to delay when you press on the gas pedal, rough idle, and poor fuel economy.
