Q: How to remove the Universal Joint?
A:
You can tap the yoke lightly to relieve the pressure from the universal joint retaining ring, remove the retaining ring from the yoke, support the propeller shaft, support the universal joint opposite of the J-9522-3-U-Joint Bearing Separator, remove the universal bearing from the yoke, the universal bearing with the J-9522-3-Separator, proceed to step 7, position the J-9522-5-U-Joint Bearing Spacer Remover on the universal joint, remove the universal bearing from the yoke, rotate the propeller shaft and repeat steps 1-8 to remove the opposite universal joint, remove the slip yoke from the propeller shaft, the retaining ring, the universal bearing, the spider, clean the slip yoke and the propeller shaft yoke of any contaminates that could prevent the retaining rings or the bearing cups from being properly installed.

Q: How to install the Universal Joint?
A:
You can position the universal bearings on either side of the yoke on the propeller shaft, install the universal joint spider until it is seated in the universal bearing, press the universal joint spider until the bearing is even with the yoke, install the retaining ring, rotate the propeller shaft and repeat steps 1-4 for the opposite universal bearing, rotate the universal joint to ensure that the universal joint moves freely. If not, use a hammer and lightly tap the yoke to seat the universal bearing against the retaining ring, install the other two universal bearings and wrap them with electrical tape or equivalent to hold the bearing in place until the propeller shaft is installed in the vehicle, position the universal spider, install the universal bearings, seat one of the universal spiders in the universal bearing, press the universal bearings, install the retaining ring, rotate the slip yoke and repeat steps 3-5 for the opposite universal bearing, position the slip yoke, position the universal bearing, center the universal spider in the universal bearing, center the universal spider in the universal bearing, install the retaining ring, rotate the propeller shaft and repeat steps 8-11 or the opposite universal bearing, rotate the universal joint to ensure that the universal joint moves freely. If not, use a hammer and lightly tap each of the yokes to seat the universal bearing against the retaining ring.

Q: What should I notice in the Universal Joint removal procedure?
A:
You never clamp propeller shaft tubing in a vise. Clamping propeller shaft tubing in a vise could dent or deform the tube causing an imbalance or unsafe condition. Always clamp on one of the yokes and support the shaft horizontally, to avoid damaging the slip yoke sealing surface. Nicks may damage the bushing or cut the lip seal.

Q: How to remove the Universal Joint-External Snap Ring?
A:
You can support the propeller shaft in a line horizontal with the table of a press, mark the propeller shaft to show which end connects to the transmission and which end goes to the rear axle, and disassemble the snap rings by pinching the ends together with a pair of pliers. If the ring does not readily snap out of the groove in the yoke, tap the end of the cup lightly to relieve the pressure from the ring. You can place the universal joint so that the lower ear of the yoke is supported on a 30 mm (1-1/8 in) hex head socket or a 27 mm (1-1/16 in) socket, place J 9522-3 on the open horizontal bearing cups. Press the lower bearing cup out of the yoke ear. If you do not completely remove the bearing cup, lift the cross and insert J 9522-5 between the seal and the bearing cup you are removing. Continue pressing the bearing cup out of the yoke. You can rotate the propeller shaft, press the opposite bearing cup out of the yoke, mark the orientation of the slip yoke to the tube for proper reassembly, remove the cross from the yoke, the remaining universal joint parts from the yoke, the bearing cups in the slip yoke in the same manner.

Q: What should I notice in the Universal Joint installation procedure?
A:
If there seems to be a hangup or binding, stop pressing, and inspect the needle bearings for misalignment in the bearing cup.

Q: How to install the Universal Joint-External Snap Ring?
A:
You can remove the bearing cups from the universal joint, assemble one bearing cup part way into 1 side of the yoke, turn the yoke ear toward the bottom, assemble the cross into the yoke so that the trunnion seats freely into the bearing cup, press the bearing cup into the yoke until the bearing cup is flush with the yoke ear, install the opposite bearing cup part way into the yoke ear, ensure that the trunnions start straight and true into both bearing cups, press the opposite bearing cup into the yoke ear while working the cross all the time to inspect for free unbinding movement of the trunnions in the bearing cups, press the bearing cup into the yoke until the bearing cup retainer groove is visible over the top of the bearing cup, assemble the bearing retainer in the retainer groove, continue pressing until both retainers can be snapped into place. If the retainer is difficult to seat, the yoke can be sprung slightly with a firm blow from a dead blow hammer. It may be necessary to lubricate the snap ring with a slight amount of chassis grease so that the snap ring seats in the bearing cup groove.
