Burnishing the brake pads and brake rotors is necessary to ensure that the braking surfaces are properly prepared after service has been performed on the disc brake system.

You can inspect the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir, raise the vehicle, remove the tire and wheel assembly, hold the brake caliper guide pin stationary, remove the lower brake caliper guide pin bolt, pivot the brake caliper upward, place a block of wood or an old brake pad against the brake caliper pistons, fully seat the caliper piston in the caliper bore, remove the inner brake pad and the outer brake pad, remove the upper and lower brake pad springs and discard the springs.

You should select a smooth road with little or no traffic, accelerate the vehicle to 48 km/h (30 mph), apply the brakes to bring the vehicle to a stop, and repeat steps 2 and 3 until approximately 20 stops have been completed.

You can install the upper and lower brake pad springs, the outer brake pad, and the inner brake pad, pivot the brake caliper to the installed position, hold the brake caliper guide pin stationary, install the lower brake caliper guide pin bolt, install the tire and wheel assembly, apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance, release the brake pedal, repeat steps 6-7 until a firm brake pedal is obtained, fill the master cylinder reservoir and burnish the brake pads and rotors.

You can inspect the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir, raise the vehicle, remove the tire and wheel assembly, place a large C-clamp over the brake caliper body and against the outer brake pad, compress the brake caliper piston fully into the brake caliper bore, hold the brake caliper guide pin stationary, remove the lower brake caliper guide pin bolt, pivot the brake caliper upward, remove the inner brake pad and the outer brake pad, remove the upper and lower brake pad springs and discard the springs.
