FAQ for Air Bag Clockspring Repair

Q: What should you verify before centering the SIR coil?
A:
You should verify that the wheels on the vehicle are straight ahead. The block tooth of the steering shaft assembly is in the 12 o'clock position. The ignition switch assembly is in the LOCK position.

Q: How to install the Steering Wheel Inflatable Restraint Module Coil?
A:
First, you need to install the wave washer and align the block tooth on the steering shaft assembly to the 12 o'clock position. If installing the existing inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil, the coil must be centered first. Then, please align the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil with the horn tower sticking through the shaft lock or cam orientation plate, slide the steering wheel module coil onto the steering shaft assembly, and remove and discard the centering tab from the coil. You also need to install the retaining ring using snap ring pliers. If the steering wheel has PAD control, you should install the wire harness assembly. Finally, you should install the wire harness strap, and the upper and lower trim covers, install the steering wheel to the column, and enable the SIR system.

Q: What should you do if the front of the SIR coil has a centering window and the back side has a spring service lock?
A:
First, you need to hold the coil face-up and rotate the coil hub clockwise until the coiled ribbon stops while depressing the spring service lock. Then, please rotate the coil hub slowly, counterclockwise, until the centering window appears yellow and both arrows line up. Finally, you should release the spring service lock between the locking tab and align the centered SIR coil with the horn tower and slide it onto the steering shaft assembly.

Q: How to remove the Steering Wheel Inflatable Restraint Module Coil?
A:
First, you need to disable the SIR system, tilt the steering column to the CENTER position, remove the steering wheel from the column and remove the upper and lower trim covers. If necessary, you should inspect the steering column for accident damage. Then, please remove the wire harness strap, and remove the wire harness assembly if the steering wheel has PAD control. Finally, you should remove the retaining ring using snap ring pliers, remove the steering wheel module coil, and remove the wave washer.
