FAQ for Throttle Body Repair

Q: How do I remove the JST Connectors?
A:
While depressing the lock, remove the connector from the component. Then you should locate the two indents of the terminal position assurance (TPA), raise the TPA on both sides of the connector, view the TPA when removed from the connector body, release the terminals, and move the terminal release to the right. While holding the removal tool in place, you should gently pull the wire out of the back of the connector. Always remember never to use force when pulling a terminal out of a connector.

Q: How do I remove the FCI Connectors?
A:
You should slide the lever lock forward while pressing down on the lever lock release tab, disconnect the connector from the component, and locate the dress cover locking tabs at the corners of the dress cover. Use a small flat-blade tool to release the locking tabs and remove the dress cover, and use a small flat-blade tool to slide the terminal position assurance (TPA) up one notch on both ends of the connector. While holding the removal tool in place, you should gently pull the wire out of the back of the connector. Always remember never to use force when pulling a terminal out of a connector.

Q: How do I install the Throttle Body Assembly?
A:
You should install the throttle body gasket to the intake manifold, align the tab of the gasket with the notch in the manifold, install the throttle body, bolts, and nuts, connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector to the electronic throttle control, install the air cleaner outlet duct, connect a scan tool to test for proper throttle-opening and throttle-closing range, operate the accelerator pedal and monitor the throttle angles, verify that the vehicle, perform the Throttle Learn Procedure and inspect for coolant leaks.

Q: What should we know about the Throttle Learn?
A:
The engine control module (ECM) learns the airflow through the throttle body to ensure the correct idle. The learned airflow values are stored within the ECM. These values are learned to adjust for production variation and will continuously learn during the life of the vehicle to compensate for reduced airflow due to throttle body coking. Anytime the throttle body airflow rate changes, for example, due to cleaning or replacement, the values must be relearned. An engine that had a heavily coked throttle body that has been cleaned or replaced may take several drive cycles to learn out the coking. To accelerate the process, the scan tool can reset all learned values back to zero. A new ECM will also have values set to zero. The idle may be unstable or a DTC may be set if the learned values do not match the actual airflow.

Q: What should we know about the danger of Wiring Repairs?
A:
To reduce the risk of personal injury, loss of high voltage isolation to ground, and higher system impedance, you can not attempt to repair any HV wiring, connector, or terminal that is damaged. High-voltage coaxial-type cables are not repairable. Never attempt to repair a coaxial-type cable. The entire cable/harness or component must be replaced. To maintain system integrity and personal safety, you can never attempt to repair any high-voltage wiring, cables, or terminals. Performing this procedure on high-voltage circuits may result in serious injury or death.

Q: How to measure the Voltage?
A:
You should disconnect the electrical harness connector for the circuit being tested, if necessary, enable the circuit and/or system being tested, turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF, turn ON the engine, turn ON the circuit and/or system with a scan tool in Output Controls and turn ON the switch for the circuit and/or system being tested. Then you should select the V (AC) or V (DC) position on the DMM, connect the negative lead of the DMM to a good ground, and connect the positive lead of the DMM to the point of the circuit to be tested. And The DMM displays the voltage measured at that point.

Q: What should be cautioned in Throttle Body Cleaning?
A:
You should remove the air cleaner outlet duct, inspect the throttle body bore and the throttle plate for deposits, and clean the throttle body bore and the throttle plate using a clean shop towel with GM Top Engine Cleaner, P/N 1052626, or AC-Delco Carburetor Tune-Up Conditioner, P/N X66-P, or an equivalent product, install the air cleaner outlet duct and perform the Throttle Learn Procedure.

Q: What should be cautioned about Using Fused Jumper Wires?
A:
Afused jumper may not protect solid-state components from being damaged. The J 36169-A includes small clamp connectors that provide adaptation to most connectors without damage. This fused jumper wire is supplied with a 20-A fuse which may not be suitable for some circuits. You can not use a fuse with a higher rating than the fuse that protects the circuit being tested.
