Q: How do you test for a short to ground in a circuit with a DMM?
A:
You can remove the power feed (i.e. fuse, control module), disconnect the load, set the rotary dial of the DMM to the Ohms position, connect one lead of the DMM to one end of the circuit to be tested and connect the other lead of the DMM to a good ground. If the DMM does NOT display infinite resistance (OL), there is a short to ground in the circuit.

A:
The procedure is to remove the cigar lighter fuse, the cigar lighter element, the cigar lighter housing, and pull the housing and the retainer out of the ashtray, disconnect the electrical connector and remove the retainer.

You can install the cigar lighter retainer, connect the electrical connector to the retainer, align the housing keyway to the key slot in the retainer ring, press the housing into place, install the cigar lighter fuse and install the cigar lighter element.

You can remove the power outlet fuse, remove the power outlet housing, remove the tool, pull the housing and the retainer out of the console, disconnect the electrical connector, and remove the retainer.

A:
You can remove the power feed (i.e. fuse, control module), disconnect the load, connect one lead of the test lamp to battery-positive voltage and connect the other lead of the test lamp to one end of the circuit to be tested. If the test lamp illuminates, there is a short to ground in the circuit.
