The proper way is to remove the Exhaust Manifold heat shield, remove the auxiliary catalytic converter nuts from the exhaust manifold, remove the exhaust manifold retaining nuts in the sequence shown, remove the exhaust manifold, and then remove the exhaust manifold gasket.

The proper way is to remove the nuts and the gasket from the rear Muffler pipe flange-to-front muffler pipe flange, remove the rear muffler assembly and then check the rear muffler and the pipe for holes, damage, open seams, and other deterioration which could permit exhaust fumes to seep into the passenger compartment or the trunk.
