FAQ for Brake Master Cylinder Repair

Q: How to fill the Master Cylinder Reservoir?
A:
You should visually inspect the brake fluid level through the brake master cylinder reservoir. If the brake fluid level is at or below the half-full point during routine fluid checks, and an inspection of the brake system did not reveal wear or brake fluid leaks, the brake fluid may be topped off up to the maximum-fill level. If brake system service was just completed, the brake fluid may be topped off up to the maximum-fill level. If the brake fluid level is above the half-full point, you should not add brake fluid under normal conditions. If the brake fluid is to be added to the master cylinder reservoir, you should clean the outside of the reservoir on and around the reservoir cap before removing the cap and diaphragm and use only Delco supreme 11(R), GM P/N 12377967 (Canadian P/N 992667), or equivalent DOT-3 brake fluid from a clean, sealed brake fluid container.

Q: How to bleed the Master Cylinder Bench?
A:
You should secure the mounting flange of the brake master cylinder in a bench vise, remove the master cylinder reservoir cap and diaphragm, install suitable fittings, route the hoses into the master cylinder reservoir, fill the master cylinder reservoir to at least the halfway point with Delco supreme 11(R), GM P/N 12377967 (Canadian P/N 992667), ensure that the ends of the transparent hoses running into the master cylinder reservoir are fully submerged in the brake fluid, depress and release the primary piston until fluid flows freely from the ports with no evidence of air bubbles, remove the transparent hoses, install the master cylinder reservoir cap and diaphragm, remove the fittings from the master cylinder ports, wrap the master cylinder with a clean shop cloth to prevent brake fluid spills and remove the master cylinder from the vise.

Q: How to remove the Master Cylinder?
A:
You should disconnect the electrical connector from the brake fluid level sensor and the brake pipes from the master cylinder, plug the open brake pipe fitting ends, carefully remove the air inlet panel support bracket push nut from the master cylinder mounting stud, carefully pull the air inlet panel support bracket outward and carefully rotate it out of the way and remove the 2 master cylinder mounting nuts, the master cylinder and the reservoir from the master cylinder if it is to be reused on a replacement master cylinder.

Q: How to disassemble Master Cylinder?
A:
You should remove the brake master cylinder from the vehicle, secure the mounting flange of the brake master cylinder in a bench vise so that the rear of the primary piston is accessible, clean the outside of the master cylinder reservoir on and around the reservoir cap before removing the cap and diaphragm, remove the reservoir cap and diaphragm from the reservoir, inspect the reservoir cap and diaphragm, remove the master cylinder reservoir from the master cylinder, depress the primary piston, remove the piston retainer and the primary piston assembly from the cylinder bore, plug the cylinder inlet ports and the rear outlet port and discard the primary piston assembly, the piston retainer, and the seals and seal retainer from the secondary piston.

Q: How to install the Master Cylinder Reservoir?
A:
You should inspect the reservoir for cracks or deformities, clean the reservoir with clean denatured alcohol, dry the reservoir with non-lubricated, filtered air, lubricate the new seals and the reservoir bayonets with new Delco supreme 11(R), GM P/N 12377967 (Canadian P/N 992667) or equivalent DOT-3 brake fluid, install the seals, making sure they are fully seated and the reservoir onto the master cylinder by pressing straight down by hand until pin holes are aligned, carefully tap in the reservoir retaining pins to secure the reservoir, fill the master cylinder reservoir and install the brake fluid level sensor and the master cylinder to the vehicle.
