FAQ for Differential Pinion Bearing Repair

Q: What can we know by measuring the amount of torque required to rotate the pinion?
A:
This will give the combined preload for the following components: the pinion bearings, the pinion oil seal, the differential case bearings, and the axle bearing (8.6-inch, 9.5-inch axles).

Q: How do you remove the drive pinion bearings?
A:
You need to remove the differential assembly and the drive pinion from the axle, press the bearing off of the drive pinion using the J 22912-B, remove the shim and the outer pinion bearing cup from the axle housing using a hammer and a brass drift in the slots provided, move the drive back and forth between one side of the cup and the other and remove the inner pinion bearing cup from the axle housing using a hammer and a brass drift in the slots provided. Then you can move the drive back and forth between one side of the cup and the other to work the cups out of the housing evenly.
