FAQ for Camber and Alignment Kit Repair

Q: What should you do before performing any adjustment affecting wheel alignment?
A:
You need to inspect the tires for the proper inflation and irregular tire wear, the runout of the wheels and the tires, the wheel bearings for backlash and excessive play, the ball joints and tie rod ends for looseness or wear, the control arms and stabilizer shaft for looseness or wear, the steering gear for looseness at the frame, the struts/shock absorbers for wear, leaks, and any noticeable noises, the vehicle trim height, the steering wheel for excessive drag or poor return due to stiff or rusted linkage or suspension components and the fuel level. The fuel tank should be full or the vehicle should have a compensating load added.

Q: What is the Z Height adjustment procedure?
A:
For vehicles equipped with a torsion bar suspension, turn the bolt that contacts the torsion arm as needed. One revolution of the bolt into the nut increases the Z height by approximately 6 mm (0.2 in). For vehicles without torsion bars, replace damaged or worn components as necessary.

Q: What should you do before measuring the trim heights?
A:
You need to ensure the vehicle is on a level surface, such as an alignment rack, ensure that the suspension is fully supporting the vehicle, remove the alignment rack floating pins, set the tire pressures to the pressure shown on the certification label, inspect the fuel level, add additional weight if necessary to simulate a full tank and close all doors, liftgate/trunk and the hood.

Q: How to adjust the Front Toe?
A:
You need to loosen the jam nut on the inner tie rod, rotate the inner tie rod to the required toe specification setting, tighten the jam nut on the tie rod, check the toe setting after tightening and re-adjust the toe setting if necessary.

Q: What is the front caster and camber adjustment procedure?
A:
The caster and camber adjustments are made by rotating the offset cam bolt and the cam in the slotted frame bracket to reposition the control arm. For an accurate reading, do not push or pull on the tires during the alignment process. Next, you can determine the caster angle and the positive camber or negative camber angle, remove the pinned adjusting cam insert and loosen the upper control arm cam adjustment bolts. Then you can adjust the caster and the camber angle by turning the cam bolts until the specifications have been met. When the adjustments are complete, hold the cam bolt head. Finally, you can verify that the caster and the camber are still within specifications.
