You can release the tension from the park brake cable system, raise the vehicle, release the left rear cable end, release the park brake cable conduit end fitting, remove the left rear tire and wheel assembly, remove the brake drum, depress the visible retaining tab on the park brake cable fitting, rotate the park brake cable, depress the remaining retaining tab on the park brake cable fitting, move the majority of the cable return spring back, push the cable toward the rear of the vehicle, lift the cable and remove the cable.

You can remove the floor console, ensure that the park brake lever assembly is fully released, raise the vehicle, have an assistant pull, hold the front park brake cable toward the rear of the vehicle, and have the assistant pull the front cable until the notch on the ratcheting cam is visible through the opening in the cam cover plate, push the pawl spring downward and have the assistant slowly release the cable to allow the notch on the cam to catch the leg of the spring.

Q: What is the proper way to replace the park lock cable?
A:
You can disconnect the negative battery cable, remove the console, remove the knee bolster, loosen the lower steering column bracket bolts, lower the steering column, place the transmission shift lever in the PARK position, turn the ignition key to the RUN position, insert a screwdriver blade into the slot, depress the cable latch, push the cable connector lock button at the shifter base to the up position, unsnap the cable, depress the two cable latches, remove the control cable latches and remove the control cable clips.
