You should disable the SIR system, remove the Inflatable restraint steering wheel module, disconnect the steering wheel electrical connector, remove the weight block from the steering wheel base, remove the steering wheel retaining nut, note the mark on the steering shaft and the steering wheel, install J 42578 and J 1859-A to the steering wheel, separate the steering wheel from the steering column, remove the steering wheel from the steering column and remove the J 42578 and J 1859-A from the steering wheel.

You should remove the steering column with the intermediate shaft attached, remove the intermediate shaft pinch bolt at the steering column and remove the intermediate Steering Shaft.
Q: How to inspect the Steering Column Accident Damage?
A:
You should inspect the capsules on the Steering Column bracket assembly. All capsules must be securely seated in the bracket slots and checked for any loose conditions when pushed or pulled by hand. You should observe how the bracket is attached to the jacket assembly, inspect for jacket assembly collapse by measuring the distance shown, replace the jacket assembly if the measured dimensions are not within specifications, inspect the steering shaft for sheared injected plastic, test the steering shaft runout for any frame damage that could cause a bent steering shaft and rotate the steering wheel. The runout must not exceed 1.60 mm (0.0625 inches).
Q: What should be noticed in removing the Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering?
A:
If reusing the existing sensor, you can not have to align the sensor before removal. Centering is not required when it is time to reinstall. If reusing the existing sensor, you must make an alignment mark on the rotor flange cuff before removing the sensor.
