FAQ for Vehicle Speed Sensors Repair

Q: How to verify good continuity in a circuit with a DMM?
A:
You can set the rotary dial of the DMM to the Ohm position, disconnect the power feed (i.e. fuse, control module) from the suspect circuit, then disconnect the load, press the MIN MAX button on the DMM, connect one lead of the DMM to one end of the circuit to be tested, and connect the other lead of the DMM to the other end of the circuit. If the DMM displays low or no resistance and a tone is heard, the circuit has good continuity.

Q: Why should I disconnect the power feed from the suspect circuit when measuring resistance with a DMM?
A:
Because this prevents incorrect readings. DMMs apply such a small voltage to measure resistance that the presence of voltages can upset a resistance reading.

Q: What should be noticed when I test the circuits?
A:
You will need to ensure that the circuits which include any solid state control modules, such as the PCM, should only be tested with a 10 mega-ohm or higher impedance digital multimeter such as the J 39200.

Q: What will happen if I gradually move the heated barrel to the open end of the tubing?
A:
The tubing will shrink completely as the heat is moved along the insulation and a small amount of sealant will come out of the end of the tubing when sufficient shrinkage is achieved.

Q: What should be done if any wire except the pigtail is damaged?
A:
You will need to repair the wire by splicing in a new section of wire of the same gauge size (0.5 mm, 0.8 mm, 1.0 mm, etc.). You can use the sealed splices and splice crimping tool from the J38125-B.

Q: What's the installation procedure for the vehicle speed sensor?
A:
The installation procedure is to install the new speed sensor and O-ring seal using J38417, coat the seal with a thin film of transmission fluid, install the bolt, tighten the bolt to 11 Nm (97-inch lbs.), then install the harness connector and refill the fluid as required.

Q: How to verify good continuity in a circuit with a Test Lamp?
A:
You can remove the power feed (i.e. fuse, control module) from the suspect circuit, disconnect the load, connect one lead of the test lamp to one end of the circuit to be tested, connect the other lead of the test lamp to the battery positive voltage, and connect the other end of the circuit to ground. If the test lamp illuminates (full intensity), then the circuit has good continuity.
