About Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais
The Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais was a small car produced and sold by Oldsmobile between 1985 and 1991. It was named after the French town of Calais. And in 1987, it was briefly produced in limited numbers as the GSO Quad 4. The Cutlass Calais used GM's N platform. The N-bodied Cutlass Calais coupe was not a bad starting point. It was considerably smaller and lighter than early versions of the Cutlass Supreme, which were based on the classic 4-4-2 engine. As one of GM's new front-wheel-drive sedans and coupes, the car was Oldsmobile's least expensive car. Despite names like GT and International Series, the Cutlass Calais coupe, with its formal roofline, looked more like a miniature Toronado than a classic muscle car.
The first production model was a white Cutlass Calais with two doors and a gray suede interior. This model featured an automatic transmission and a four-cylinder, two-cylinder with 92 horsepower and nearly every optional part available. Although this front-wheel-drive car is housed at the Olds Transportation Museum in Lansing, Michigan, it is one of more than 700 cars in the Heritage Collection of historically significant vehicles from the early 20th century. In 1987, the Quad 4 was offered in a special limited edition.

The Quad-442 was a special version of the Cutlass Calais that came out a little later. It had a faster version of the four-cylinder motor and a manual gearbox with five speeds. In the Cutlass Calais International, the top model was also a performance version of the same car. It came with either two or four doors and had parts that were only available in Calais, like lowered front and back bumpers, lowered axles, and a four-way sport exhaust. Some of the parts were changed, like adding sports seats with tufted upholstery and leather or cloth power buttons on the driver's side.
The Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais Quad-442 was not only beautiful, but it could also demonstrate the performance of the 442 names. It accelerated in 7 seconds and reached speeds of nearly 80 mph. Not much for 2019, but at the time, this car compact was impressive. The EPA rating was 36 mpg highway, so it was also very efficient. Oldsmobile had a true performance car on its hands. The four-cylinder engine first appeared in the 1987 Cutlass Calais GT. It was a 4-4-2 model with a 180-horsepower W-41. The small Quad-4 had a chain drive and twin overhead camshafts. It produced impressive power for a small motor. All of these Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais parts contributed to the driving qualities of the car.
