About Mercedes-Benz 560SL
The new "S" Class sedans of 1981 marked the new generation of light-alloy M116 3.8-liter powerplants. And the SL received this silent if moderately underpowered drivetrain as well. Thus in 1981 production began for the 380SL. After five years of production, Mercedes-Benz launched its flagship 560 SL at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1985. In the Benz 560SL, Mercedes offers bullet-proof reliability, satisfying power, and aggressive good looks. The Benz 560SL combined the V-8 R107 chassis cars into a cultural icon.
The Mercedes-Benz 560SL is the top-of-the-line variant for the R107 SL-Class. Launched in 1986, the Mercedes-Benz 560 SL was powered by a 5.5L V8 engine. Mercedes-Benz560SL was paired with manual and automatic transmissions. The engine was used in Europe for the S-Class sedans, leaving the USA, Australia, and Japan with a 560 SL convertible. With a compression ratio of 9.0:1 and Bosch CIS-E fuel injection, it was rated by the manufacturer at 227 horsepower. These markets got a detuned version with a catalytic converter and only 230 hp. Mercedes-Benz 560SL was sold in the United States, Canada, Japan, and Australia. The displacement was meant to compensate for the reduced output of the 500 SL 5.0-liter engine because of the stricter emission laws in these markets. The production of the Mercedes-Benz 560SL lasted until 1989. At that time, the model series was discontinued.
