The 850CSi was the top variant of the 8 series. Production of the 850CSi ended in late 1996. The model needed to be significantly redesigned or it would not be able to comply with the new emissions regulations. The BMW 8 Series boasted a luxury model with high-quality parts and elite sports car performance. The 8 Series had impressive exterior styling. After the 1999 model year, the BMW 8 Series was discontinued. the BMW 8 Series embodied the brand's desire for a vehicle with great performance and a luxurious experience.
In 1992, an 850CSi hit the road with a V12 engine and 375 hp. It serves as a new model to be introduced with the 840Ci. The 840Ci shares the same V8 as the 740 and 540. The 850CSi uses the same engine as the 850i. It was significantly modified, resulting in a new engine code: S70B56. It included Bosch Motronic 1.7 fuel injection, increased capacity to 5,576 ccs (5.6 L), and increased power to 280 kW (375 hp) at 5,300 rpm and 550 N-m (406 lbf-ft) torque at 4,000 rpm. Road & Track recorded a 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) time of 5.9 seconds for the 850CSi. The 850CSi is equipped with standard parts with a sports suspension and a six-speed manual transmission.

Unfortunately, the introduction of the 850CSi takes away from the sportiness of the 850Ci. Now it is saddled with a four-speed automatic as the only transmission choice. As for safety, extensive crash tests have been taken by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety to determine car safety. The moderate overlap front test shows an undesirable result.
The 850CSi suspension has also been improved to include stiffer springs and shock absorbers that lower the car's ride height. To improve aerodynamics, BMW has modified the front and rear bumpers. Four round stainless steel exhaust ports replaced the square exhaust ports on other models. A 6-speed manual gearbox became the only option. In Europe, they were equipped with four-wheel steering (AHK - Aktive Hinterachs-Kinematik, Active rear axle kinematics), upgraded and ventilated brake parts with floating front discs, rear differential oil cooler, engine oil cooler, two-tone interior trim, sport seat parts, and remodeled mirrors parts. In the United States, the car's door handles read "BMW Motorsport".
