The current 5 Series is more varied than any other generation of engines. Since 1972, when the original 5 Series was launched, only one generation of the car has not had a four-cylinder engine: the BMW 528xi. The base model uses the 2.0-liter N20 motor with turbocharging and direct injection that develops 241 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. It has more power than any four-cylinder that came before it, as well as more powerful than many older six-cylinder engines and even some early V8s. Its peak torque is only 1,250 rpm, which makes it perfect for use with an automatic transmission. Because of recent improvements in powertrain technology, heavier mid-range models like the BMW 528xi can now use small powertrains.
