American Motors Corporation (AMC) was founded in 1954. It was headquartered in Michigan, USA. It was an American automobile manufacturer. In its history, AMC was the largest joint venture company. AMC focused on the small car and station wagon. Its Eagle utility models were also the first true crossover to appear in the U.S. market. Renault acquired a major stake in AMC in 1979. And it was eventually bought by Chrysler.

In the 1950s, AMC combined the product lines of Hudson and Nash. But the larger Nash and Hudson ranges did not sell well. AMC was losing money every year. And the division was later reorganized as AM General. On March 31, 1978, AMC and Renault jointly manufacture and distribute vehicles and trucks.

Eventually, the company owned AMC's 49 percent in 1983. 1985 saw a major change as the market shifted away from smaller models. On March 9, 1987, Chrysler agreed to buy the company's stake and all remaining shares. Upon completion of the sale, AMC became the Jeep-Eagle division. And it changed its name to Jeep Eagle Corporation on August 25, 1988. It was fully merged on March 29, 1990.
